Embracing Weight Gain: A Journey of Self-Love

As a late 30-something who’s been through the ringer of childbirth not once, but twice, I know the struggle all too well. From keto to paleo, from meal replacements to intermittent fasting, I’ve tried them all in a desperate bid to reclaim my pre-baby body. But guess what? It’s been quite the ride, and regrettably: the scale still mocks me.

So, what have I learned from this whirlwind journey? Here are three nuggets of wisdom I’m dropping right now:

  1. Not All Diet Plans are Created Equal: Oh, the naive optimism I had when I started this journey, I was even thinking of all the possibilities. I thought, “Hey, if it worked for that celebrity, it’ll work for me too, right?” Wrong! What I’ve come to realize is that what works for one person might be a recipe for disaster for another. Our bodies are unique, and what they need to thrive varies from person to person. So, if your best friend swears by the latest fad diet but it leaves you hangry and miserable, don’t force it. Find what works for YOU.
  2. Mind Over Body: There’s this eternal struggle between willpower and cravings. Some days, I feel like I could conquer Mount Everest with my sheer determination to eat clean and cycle sometimes. Other days, just the thought of a salad sends me into a downward spiral of self-pity and Baskin Robbins. And you know what? That’s okay! We’re only human, and we’re allowed to have off days. The key is to not let those off days derail your entire journey. Dust yourself off, forgive yourself, and get back on track tomorrow. One bad meal won’t ruin your progress, just like one salad won’t make you a supermodel.
  3. Love Yourself: After years of beating myself up over every extra slice of pizza or the laziness of jogging, I’ve finally learned to show myself some love. Having yourself into a smaller dress size doesn’t work. Trust me, I’ve tried. Instead of punishing yourself for every perceived failure, celebrate the small victories along the way. Did you resist the urge to dive headfirst into the office donut box? Absolutely, you did! Pat yourself on the back and keep on keeping on. Remember, you’re more than just a number on a scale. You’re an unbelievable skilled warrior who’s capable of amazing things, whether you’re a size 2 or a size 12.

The age-old question remains: After countless brave souls have embarked on the dietary battlefield, how can we fortify these nutritional regimens to secure lasting victory?” Here’s my two cents:

  • Work, Customize, Repeat: Don’t be afraid to tweak that diet plan to suit your needs. Hate kale with a passion? Swap it out for spinach or broccoli. Can’t live without your morning latte? Opt for almond milk instead of dairy. The key is to make it work for YOU, not the other way around.
  • Stay Consistent, but Flexible: Consistency is key when it comes to seeing results and achieving your weight goals, but that doesn’t mean you have to be a slave to your meal plan 24/7. Life happens, and sometimes that means pizza night with the family or cocktails with your better half. Or rather than consuming carbs at night, go for healthier options like a bit of potatoes. Instead of throwing in the towel and declaring defeat, aim for balance. Stick to your plan 80% of the time and allow yourself some wiggle room the other 20%.
  • Find What Fuels You: Forget about punishing yourself with endless hours on the treadmill or depriving yourself of your favourite foods. Instead, focus on finding activities and foods that make you feel good from the inside out. Whether it’s dancing like nobody’s watching, customizing a menu you just learned, or indulging in a delicious piece of dark chocolate, do what brings you joy and watch the magic happen.
