Naan is a beloved flatbread known for its soft, pillowy texture. This versatile staple has been enjoyed for centuries as a delicious accompaniment to many dishes. Here’s an easier way of preparing especially for a quick snack. This is not a traditional method, just had to ease the process.
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 teaspoons butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour or bread flour
- 1 1/2 cups mozzarella or cheddar cheese (or a mix of both)
HOW T0 MAKE:
Prepare the Dough:
- In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the butter and milk. Microwave for about 50 seconds, or until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm.
- Stir well to combine. Add the yeast, salt, and sugar to the warm milk mixture. Mix thoroughly and let it sit for a few minutes until the yeast activates.
- Gradually fold in the flour until well incorporated. Whole wheat flour can be used as a healthier option if desired.
- Knead the Dough:
- Microwave the dough for 15-20 seconds until it’s just warm enough to touch without being too hot.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic. Divide the dough into equal portions.
Prepare the Cheese Filling:
- Grate the mozzarella or cheddar cheese (or a combination of both) and set it aside.
Assemble the Naan:
- Take one portion of the dough and flatten it thinly on a floured surface. Place a generous amount of grated cheese (and any other desired toppings like bacon or ham) onto the center of the dough.
- Carefully place another portion of dough on top of the cheese filling. Press down the edges firmly and crimp them to seal the filling inside.
Cook the Naan:
- Heat a skillet or non-stick pan over medium heat. Place the assembled naan on the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Repeat the process with the remaining dough portions, adjusting the heat as needed to prevent burning.
Tips:
There’s no need to worry about achieving a perfect shape for your naan. Embrace imperfections and enjoy the unique character of each bread.
Experiment with different cheese varieties and additional toppings to customize your naan to your taste preferences.
The dough can be made ahead of time and stored in the freezer for up to a month. Simply wrap it tightly in cling wrap, place it in a sealed container, and thaw before using.
Dusting the dough with flour before rolling and flattening helps prevent it from sticking to the surface and makes the process easier.
